Legal Guidance

The Office of University Counsel provides legal advice and assistance to the Oregon Tech Board of Trustees, President, Provost, central administration, deans, directors and faculty. The services of the University General Counsel’s office include advice and counsel on all matters having legal significance for the University, coordination of outside counsel handling specialized matters, assistance with policy development, review of major contracts, assistance with compliance obligations, and advises University employees when legal questions arise in connection with their job duties.

The Office of University Counsel does not provide legal advice or representation to employees on personal matters, and does not provide legal advice to students, except when those students are employees or are acting in an official role at the university (such as an officer in student government). University officials may contact the Office of University Counsel at any time, but you are encouraged to do so as early as possible when potential legal matters are likely to arise. A faculty or staff member should contact the Office of University Counsel’s office as soon as possible upon receiving any of the following documents:

  • A subpoena related to the recipient’s responsibilities as an Oregon Tech employee 
     
  • A request for public records. Please refer the requester to the Office of Public Records webpage: https://www.oit.edu/public-records 
     
  • A threat of filing litigation or an official claim. 
     
  • A summons/complaint filed with a court.
