Caroline Schulze, a Civil Engineering student at Oregon Tech, has been selected as a recipient of the 2021-22 Women’s Transportation Seminar (WTS) Portland Chapter Sharon D. Banks Scholarship valued at $5,000. This is a highly competitive scholarship with applicants from colleges and universities throughout Oregon and Washington.
Originally from Loveland, Colorado, Caroline is on track to graduate in 2023 with a bachelor's and master's degree in civil engineering. Her transportation interests include pavement condition analysis techniques and asphalt concrete mix design.
Caroline is the past president of the ITE Student Chapter and is also a recipient of scholarships from ITE (the Institute of Transportation Engineers), NITC (the National Institute for Transportation & Communities) and the Asphalt Pavement Association of Oregon (APAO).
Additionally, Caroline recently completed an internship with GRI Engineering in Beaverton, Oregon, where she worked extensively in geotechnical testing and pavement engineering. Her work with GRI on pavement inspection and soil testing sparked her interest in the transportation industry and allowed her to recognize the role of transportation engineers in the "real world." She understands that infrastructure projects can impact the surrounding community and the importance of community engagement.
Due to COVID concerns, the formal scholarship award will take place at a virtual WTS award ceremony in early February 2022 in place of WTS Portland's usual in-person scholarship dinner.
