Oregon Institute of Technology has officially announced the appointment of Dr. Mateo Aboy to the position of Associate Provost and Vice President of Research. He will start in this position on Jan. 1, 2012.
Dr. Aboy is currently the Department Chair of the Electrical Engineering and Renewable Energy Engineering Department at Oregon Tech. In his new role, he will be part of the university’s Executive Team and assume overall responsibility for the successful operation of Oregon Tech’s new Wilsonville campus which opens Fall Term 2012. He will provide academic leadership and guidance in positioning Oregon Tech’s new, consolidated presence in the Portland/Salem education market.

Dr. Aboy joined the faculty at Oregon Tech during the 2004/05 academic year as a Program Director for the Electronics program in Portland. Under his leadership as the Electrical Engineering & Renewable Energy (EERE) Department Chair (2008-Present) and as a Portland Program Director (2005-2008), the EERE Department achieved significant strategic objectives, transforming from a technology department with a single program (BSEET) to a multidisciplinary engineering department offering full engineering degrees including a BS in Electrical Engineering, a BS in Renewable Energy Engineering, and a MS in Renewable Energy Engineering. During his tenure, the EERE department experienced remarkable growth (20 EERE Portland students in 2004 to over 200 by 2011), nearly doubling the overall student enrollment at the OIT-Portland campuses.
Dr. Aboy is passionate about education, research, and innovation. While at OIT he has taught over 130 courses, helped secure funding through grants in excess of $3 million, published over 75 scholarly articles in engineering and health journals and conferences, invented or co-invented over 25 patented or patent pending inventions, founded the Office of Innovation and Technology Transfer at Oregon Tech, and engaged in entrepreneurial activity resulting in a joint PSU-OIT-OHSU medical device company (APDM, Inc www.apdm.com).
Dr. Aboy’s academic background encompasses the areas of engineering, health sciences, management, and intellectual property. His technical education background includes a BS in Electrical Engineering, a BS Physics with Minor in Mathematics, a MS in Electrical & Computer Engineering, a MS in Telecommunications Engineering, and a PhD in Electrical Engineering (ETSIT-University of Vigo, Spain). Additionally, he holds a MBA in International Management from University of London, completed the Executive Program in Management & Leadership at MIT Sloan (Exec. Cert.), and has a Bar Admission to practice patent law before the United States Patent & Trademark Office as a Registered Patent Agent.

- Bachelor of Applied Science in Technology and Management
- Bachelor of Science in Embedded Systems Engineering Technology
- Master of Science in Renewable Energy Engineering
