The OIT Student Chapter of the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) earned third place in the 2010 ITE Oregon Section William C. Kloos Traffic Bowl held November 18, 2010 in Troutdale Oregon. The students then spent November 19, 2010 touring transportation projects in the Portland area.
Congratulations to team members Noah Brennan (captain), Dylan Durrell, Quency Fahlgren, and Sarah Johnson. The OIT team came from behind to place second in the opening round (beating archrival Oregon State University) which earned them a spot in the medal round where they finished third behind winner Portland State University and runner-up University of Portland. Winners at regional events are invited to compete in the ITE Collegiate Traffic Bowl Grand Championship held in August of each year at the ITE Annual Meeting.
The Traffic Bowl is a Jeopardy®-style quiz game where students from universities around the country answer questions (actually they pose questions a la Jeopardy®) on transportation topics ranging from design vehicular deceleration rates (1/3g, of course) to the mode of travel described in Sheena Easton’s 1980 pop music hit (her baby takes the morning train!).
OIT’s ITE Student Chapter is comprised of 27 civil engineering students and is led by 2010-11 President Zachary Davis, VPs Dylan Durrell and Noah Brennan, and Secretary Sarah Johnson. The faculty advisor is Dr. Roger Lindgren. In addition to the Traffic Bowl trip, the Chapter sponsored a tour of the Eugene bus rapid transit project in early November and is planning for more field trips as well as technical lectures to take place in Winter and Spring 2011 terms.
