After receiving additional information from local businesses and upon further investigation, Oregon Institute of Technology’s Campus Safety has learned that Ryan Daily has been soliciting for an annual basketball publication for the Cascade Collegiate Conference. Ryan Daily is employed by University Sports Publications in New York. Cascade Collegiate Conference contracted with the outside company to sell advertising space for an annual basketball publication that was first produced last season. Oregon Tech’s intercollegiate athletics is part of the Cascade Collegiate Conference.
Michael Schell, director of athletics at Oregon Tech, was not contacted by the Cascade Collegiate Conference regarding solicitation for advertising in the publication.
“Cascade Collegiate Conference didn’t notify me or my staff that they were selling ads in the area for their publication. No authorization has been granted to solicit advertising using Oregon Tech or Oregon Tech Athletics name or logos. As a member of the Cascade Collegiate Conference informing potential advertisers of our affiliation would be appropriate. This situation is unfortunate and could have been avoided by a telephone call or email or had the sales person provided a more open means to verify his association. The university did what it had to do using the information we had at the time. An erroneous phone number was given to use for the salesman and other described tactics further raised our level of concern,” commented Schell. “The university acted to protect the public interest and the university’s own name.”
