Students from Oregon Tech’s Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering program were awarded scholarships from Korea University of Technology and Education (KUT) to participate in a three-week summer program at the university from July 2-21, 2012.
Alexandria Royal and Kelli Hayden, both sophomores majoring in Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering at Oregon Tech, each received a $2000 scholarship from KUT. Royal and Hayden will attend KUT’s International Summer School in South Korea.
The program includes learning the Korean language and culture, Taekwondo, and taking various field trips.
“Exchange programs, such as this, are an extremely valuable learning experience for our students,” commented Brian Moravec, Chair of the Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering Department at Oregon Tech. “Every year the design and manufacture of commercial products becomes less of an individual effort and more of a global effort; for example when Boeing designed the 747 in the 1960's it outsourced just five percent of the work to companies located in other countries, Boeing now outsources 30 percent of its new 787. Exchange programs help our students to bridge the language and cultural differences that exist between the U.S. and our global partners; allowing them to become better professionals in the global environment.”
Korea University of Technology and Education, located in Cheonan, South Chungcheong, South Korea is a world-class university specializing in teaching practical engineering. KUT is highly regarded for its nearly 100 percent graduate career placement.
This is the first time Korea University of Technology and Education has offered scholarships to Oregon Tech students.
