Oregon Tech Alumni Spotlight: The Elfbrandt Family Legacy
In our latest Alumni Spotlight, we feature the Elfbrandt family, whose connection to Oregon Tech spans multiple generations. This family's story reflects a legacy of dedication, education, and a shared love for technology and service.
Glenn Elfbrandt, an Oregon Tech alumnus and current employee, shares the fascinating journey of his family with Oregon Tech. Glenn has not only built a remarkable career in technology and management but also contributed significantly to the community and the university as a whole.
Glenn’s wife, Lisa, also attended Oregon Tech, and while she didn’t complete her degree, her connection to the university adds another layer to the family's deep ties. Glenn’s daughter, Hannah, attended Oregon Tech for a time, studying renewable energy and management information systems, further cementing the family's multi-generational legacy.
The Elfbrandt family's Oregon Tech connection began with Albert "Al" Elfbrandt, who graduated in 1958 with a degree in accounting. Albert, known by his middle name, was deeply involved in campus life, including being a member of the OTI Fire Department. After graduation, he worked as an accountant in Coos Bay, eventually becoming a full-time firefighter for the North Bend Fire Department, where he served until the mid-1990s.
Glenn, son of Albert, enrolled at Oregon Tech in 1983, pursuing electronics engineering. After earning his associate's degree, he shifted to operations management for his bachelor's. Glenn's career took him to prominent roles at Boeing and Washington Mutual, where he advanced to an AVP-level position as a data center manager. His expertise in IT and data center management made him a key player in projects like the commissioning of Washington Mutual's first Enterprise Data Center at Sabey's Tukwila site.
His technical skills and leadership abilities have made him a sought-after expert in the field. He has worked on significant projects, including early beta testing for Windows 95 for Microsoft and helping Seattle Children’s Hospital get its project management team up to speed. His ability to step into complex situations and provide solutions has earned him a reputation as an IT superhero.
As an adjunct instructor for the Management Information Systems (MIS) department, he teaches courses and helps shape the next generation of IT professionals. His involvement in the university community demonstrates his dedication to giving back and supporting the institution that played a crucial role in his own education and career.
Glenn’s twin sons, Matt and Mark, are continuing the family tradition at Oregon Tech. Both are heavily involved in the university's robotics program, a passion that began in high school. Matt is pursuing a degree in software engineering, while Mark, originally interested in mechanical engineering, is now exploring accounting. Both work at Oregon Tech’s service desk, gaining valuable experience and contributing to the campus community.
The Elfbrandt family's story highlights the impact of an Oregon Tech education on multiple generations, showcasing their achievements and dedication to service. Their journey reflects the university’s commitment to providing hands-on, practical education that prepares students for successful careers.
