Pathway to Licensure

In general, Oregon Tech's online BS in Echocardiography does not provide a direct pathway to state licensure as a cardiac sonographer. Our online degree requires all applicants to hold their RDCS (AE) from the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers or their RCS from Cardiovascular Credentialing International.

Per the Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers only New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, and Oregon offer state licensure of sonographers. Independent searching for several state licensing agencies supports the SDMS findings. Official state websites should always be used as the primary source of information when reviewing license requirements.

This page only references eligibility for our online degree completion program and is not related to our campus-based program.

Connecticut does not regulate sonography, including cardiac sonography. The state does require a license for Radiography and Nuclear Medicine.

The New Hampshire Office of Professional Licensure and Certification regulates sonographers practicing within the state. Sonographers must provide a copy of their certification card from the ARRT, ARDMS, or CCI, along with other items such as transcripts and a completed background check. Because Oregon Tech's online program also requires cardiac sonographers to have earned their credentials with the ARDMS or CCI (RDCS (AE) or RCS specifically) this online degree advancement program for working professionals is not an eligibility pathway in New Hampshire.

Reviewed 5/10/24

New Mexico's Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy Program requires Cardiac Sonography license applicants to have completed the RDCS with the ARDMS or RCS with CCI. Because Oregon Tech's online degree advancement program requires the RDCS (AE) ARDMS or RCS CCI exam requirements this online program is not an eligibility pathway to New Mexico licensure.

North Dakota's Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy Board processes applications for sonography licensure in the state. Among the licensure requirements is proof of a current national registry relevant to the candidate's field - this includes the ARDMS and CCI. Oregon Tech's online BS in Echocardiography requires proof of the RDCS (AE) from ARDMS or RCS from CCI before someone is accepted to our program; this degree is not an eligibility pathway to ND licensure.

Imaging professionals (in cardiac sonography) seeking licensure in Oregon must have earned a credential from the ARDMS or CCI. Oregon Tech's Online program does not play a role in an individual's eligibility since all candidates for this program must already be credentialed with the ARDMS (RDCS AE) or CCI (RCS).
