Why did you choose Oregon Tech?
I chose Oregon Tech because of the Renewable Energy Engineering and Applied Mathematics programs. The REE program had an intriguing blend of classes that reached into several different engineering disciplines, and the Applied Mathematics program is one of the few in Oregon that offers truly applied classes. I feel that these two programs have prepared me very well for the career I want to enter.
What do you like best about your major?
I like the diversity of the Renewable Energy Engineering program. There are three different senior sequences that allow for a narrower focus in the last two years. I feel that these sequences also give the graduates better chances at finding employment. I chose the power sequence for the program, and have already been invited to several secondary interviews because of the depth of my knowledge in that area.
What would be your dream job in your major?
If I had to choose, I would say my dream job would be as a substation design engineer in Maine or Scotland, but I would like to be anywhere where I enjoy my work. I hope to find a job with good people, doing what I enjoy.
What’s your favorite thing to do off campus?
I enjoy going over to the coast and going kayak fishing with my dad. This past time is something that my dad and I started doing while I was in high school. We used to go kayak fishing out on the ocean every weekend that we could.
What’s your most memorable moment on campus?
Creating an arc welder out of a power supply while working on my senior project. The power of electricity was manifested in this experience. The leads on the power supply had been switched, and when the power supply was hooked up to our batteries, we created an arc welder. No one was injured, and there was no damage to the batteries or power supply, thanks to the quick response of my team members.
