The Oregon Tech Veterans’ Association (OVA) will host a physical/mental challenge at the Oregon Institute of Technology campus on Friday, May 23. On Saturday and Sunday, May 24-25, the competition will take place out by Sportsman Park in Keno, Oregon.

The events within the challenge are all derived from the US SOCOM community, which challenges the willingness and determination of teams looking to see if they have what it takes to strive for the best. The competition is a way to recognize the sacrifices of American veterans who have fallen or been wounded in service of our country. By the end of the competition the participants understand what it takes to be part of an elite group in the United States military.

The event is organized by the Oregon Tech Veterans’ Association program. So far, the group has confirmed teams from the University of Oregon, Oregon Tech, the United States Air Force Academy, and a local Klamath Falls team comprised of veterans.

“Drawing attention to Klamath County like this is a big deal,” co-founder and main facilitator Armando Davila said. “We want them to finish with a sense of honor and pride, because now they have built a lasting bond with our event, community, and those who paid the ultimate sacrifice to our nation.”

The OVA actively seeks out community participation in regards to business sponsorships of teams, raffle donations, event space, and involving local police/medical support and guard personnel. Spectators are also welcome and encouraged.

Challenges include physical fitness, pool events in full gear, navigation courses, shooting range and marksmanship, and knowledge tests in math, physics, engineering, and military history given by Oregon Tech professors. The team that collects the highest score throughout the weekend wins the Iron Owl trophy and the grand prize.

Any business or individual interested in helping with the Iron Owl Challenge should contact the Oregon Tech Veterans Association. Call the office at 541-891-0614 or email Armando Davila at armando.davila@oit.edu.
