KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – Oregon Tech drained 12 first half 3-point field goals and the Hustlin’ Owls defeated Vancouver Island University-BC for the second time in as many days, 93-70, this afternoon in men’s basketball action at Danny Miles Court.
The Hustlin’ Owls, in their last non-conference game of the season improved to 9-7 and Head Coach Danny Miles creeps closer to 1,000 career wins, now at 996 in his 43 seasons at Tech.
Oregon Tech connected on their first four tries from long range and moved out to a 15-3 lead in the first five minutes of play. The Owls would use four more triples to take a commanding 20 point lead, 30-10, with 10 minutes to play in the opening period. The teams traded points over the last 10 minutes of the first half with Tech taking a 52-33 advantage into the break.
Tech moved out to their largest lead of the second half when Kyle Waits connected on a 3-pointer with 13:47 remaining, as the Owls led 64-37 over the Mariners. VIU battled back over the next four minutes when an 18-8 Mariner run got the visitors as close as 17 points, 72-55, at the midway point.
Tech never let the game get closer, marching their way to the 93-70 win.
Kyle Waits led all scorers with his game-high 26 points to go with a team leading seven rebounds. Austen Flint notched 13 points, including three from beyond the arch. Mihajlo Matic hit four 3-pointers to net 12 points, followed by Josh Johnson with 11 points and five rebounds in the win.
Jason Fortin notched a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Mariners with Clayton Billett leading VIU in scoring with 21 points.
