ASHLAND, Ore. – Kyle Waits scored a game-high 27 points and Oregon Tech moved to 5-5 overall after holding on for a 86-79 win over New Hope Christian College this afternoon at the Flagship Inn Classic in Ashland.
A slow offensive start by both games saw the Owls trail 9-8 five minutes into play. The teams tied at 16-16 nearing the midway point of the first half before Tech jumped out to a 25-17 advantage, and took a 36-33 lead into intermission.
The teams battled through three ties in the second stanza with Tech leading 57-56 with just over 11 minutes remaining to play.
The Owls looked to secure the win after a 12-2 run pushed Tech to an 11 point lead, 69-58, with 6:48 remaining in the game. The Owls would eventually hold on to a comfortable 13 point edge, 76-63, with under five minutes on the clock, however, NHC, never went away.
Over the next four minutes, the Deacons used a 14-4 push to get to within a possession, but with 43 seconds remaining a pair of Austen Flint free throws made it a five point game, 82-77, with 30 seconds to play. NHC got it to three once again but the Owls closed the game with a 4-for-4 effort at the charity stripe to earn the 86-79 victory.
Kyle Waits, for the second-straight game, led the Owls with a game-high 27 points to go with 10 rebounds for a double-double. Mihajlo Matic added 17 points with Derek Evans recording 11 in the win for Tech. Austen Flint and Brandon Bautista finished with 10 each to put five Owls in double figures. Tanner Manselle grabbed 10 rebounds and chipped in eight points.
Nick Dillingham led the Deacons with a team-high 22 points, followed by 21 points from Alex Coleman. Corey Gnatt added 15 points and TJ Little 12 in the loss for NHC.
