Adams Reaches Finals, Conditt Finishes 13th in Shot on Day 2 of Championships

GULF SHORES, Ala. – On the second day of competition at the 2014 NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships at the Mickey Miller Blackwell Stadium on Friday Oregon Tech’s Kassi Conditt missed the shot put finals finishing in 13th with Paul Adams qualifying for 5,000 finals on Saturday.

Conditt came up a little short in her attempt to reach All-American status as the senior from La Pine, Oregon missed the finals by 1 and ½ feet. Conditt’s best throw of the day came on her 3rd attempt as she reached 13.43m or 44-00.75. Conditt ends her Owls career as Oregon Tech’s All-Time best in the shot put with a school record of 13.99m 45-10.75 ahead of Brianne Kenyon who sits in 2nd place with 42-10.25.

Adams ran in heat one of the 5,000 preliminaries finishing with a time of 15:32.92 good enough for Saturday’s 5,000 finals.

On Day 1, Oregon Tech’s Joelle Swanson (Grants Pass, Ore.) hit a throw of 44.78 m 146’-11’ a distance that clinched her 3rd place while setting a new PR by more than 2 feet, as she became only the 2nd Lady Owl to become a Three Time All – American, joining fellow Javelin thrower Michelle Klaja. Klaja is 2nd all time at OIT with a throw of 151-01 with Sarah Shelb holding the Tech Javelin record with a throw of 155-10 back in 2010.

Swanson finished 7 ½ feet ahead of the 4th place finisher, Christine Austin, of British Columbia , in the event won by Concordia(Neb.) Sophomore Elizabeth King with a toss of 164-08. Emma Buchholz of Concordia (Ore.) rounded out the top 4 with a throw of 45.57m 149-06 edging Swanson by 2 feet -7 inches for 2nd place.

Day 3 events on Saturday will start early for Oregon Tech with Scott Minor and Kirby Garlitz running in the Marathon at 3:00 am Pacific Time. Paul Adams will run in the 5K finals scheduled for 2:55 pm.
