Tech Inks DI Big Island Player of the Year

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – Veteran head basketball coach Danny Miles announced the signing of Jalen Carvalho (Hilo, Hawaii) to a letter of intent for the upcoming 2014-15 season.

The 6-3 Hilo High School point guard led the State in scoring, while garnering First Team All-State accolades and Division I Player of the Year honors in the Big Island Interscholastic Federation.

Carvalho averaged 28.9 points per game and was his team’s top outside shooter, hitting 43.5% from the floor and 40.1% of his shots from outside the arc. He also led his team in rebounds (8.8) and assists (3.1) per contest.

In league play, his scoring high was 36 points against Kealakehe in the final game of the regular season. In preseason action Carvalho notched 47 points where he hit two buzzer-beaters, including an overtime game-winner to defeat Waiakea 67-64.

Currently in his senior season for the Viking baseball program, Carvalho will also participate in Tech’s baseball program where the professional prospect throws in the high 80’s. Currently Carvalho has an ERA of 0.00 while leading HHS with a .620 batting average to go with three homeruns, three triples and two doubles with 12 RBI and 12 runs scored.

“Jalen has the chance to be one of the top 5 two-sport athletes ever to play at Oregon Tech,” said Miles. “I am very excited to have Jalen in our program as he picked us over several other schools.”

Jalen is the son of Dave and Sandy Carvalho and plans to major in psychology beginning this fall at Oregon Tech.
