06.13.2009 - Oregon Tech Baseball Adds Trio to 2010 Roster

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore - Oregon Tech head baseball coach Matt Miles announced today that Dustin Buttner, Cory Staniforth and Ryan Hill will all be joining the Hustlin' Owl baseball team beginning this fall.

Buttner (Carson City, NV) a 6-3 first baseman at Carson High School was a 1st team all-conference selection in 2009, hitting .379 with a .810 slugging percentage. Buttner led the conference with 29 RBI, including six homeruns and two triples. The two-time academic and varsity letter winner also was honored with an Academic all-state award in 2008.

Dustin is the youngest son of Bob and Diane Buttner of Carson City, Nevada

Staniforth (Central Point, OR), a 6-0 shortstop from Crater High School, hit .509 with 34 RBI and four homeruns his senior season for the Comets. The Crater High three-sport standout in football, basketball and baseball was a 1st team all-state shortstop, helping the Comets to a state baseball championship 2007. Over a three-year stint with the Grants Pass Nuggets American Legion program, Staniforth batted .448 with 14 homeruns, 83 RBI and 26 stolen bases. The Lane Community College transfer led the Titans in RBI in both 2008 and 2009.

Cory is the son of Ronald and Donna Staniforth and will major in Medical Imaging at Oregon Tech beginning this fall.

Hill (White Pass, WA), a 6-5 pitcher/utility player at Yakima Valley Community College the past two years, also competed at White Pass High School as first baseman and pitcher. Hill helped his White Pass High School team to a runner-up finish in the 2007 state baseball championship where he was named the leagues Player of the Year and to the All-State team as both a position player and pitcher.

Ryan is the son of David and Suzan Hill.

06.09.2009 - Oregon Tech's Strom Named CCC Scholar-Athlete of the Year

PORTLAND, Ore. -Josh Strom of the Oregon Tech baseball team and Caitlin Verhofstadt of the Concordia University women's soccer team have been voted the 2008-09 Cascade Collegiate Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Year, the league office announced today.

The annual awards, voted on by the CCC's athletic directors, are presented to one male and one female who have distinguished themselves on the field of play and in the classroom during the academic year.

Strom, a senior left-hander from Canby, Ore., will graduate later this week with a degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology. He was recognized on the CCC's All-Academic team in addition to being named an NAIA-Daktronics Scholar-Athlete.

The 6-0 Strom was honored as the Cascade Collegiate Conference Pitcher of the Year this past season after compiling an 8-4 record and 3.16 ERA for the Hustlin' Owls, who captured an NAIA West division title in addition to winning a school-record 33 games. Strom threw six complete games in 14 starts and led the Owls with 72 strikeouts. Strom ranked No. 1 in the conference in innings pitched (88 1/3) and ranked second in the league in strikeouts and wins.

"Josh was a big part in our program's success this year," said OIT baseball coach Matt Miles. "His leadership on and off the field is due in large part to his character and his academic success. As a program we thank Josh for his dedication in displaying the true meaning of the term ‘student-athlete.'"
