Fall Baseball

Oregon Tech's baseball team opened up their third season under Head Coach Matt Miles on September 21st. Fall Practices and intersquad games will be played through October 31st, and culminates with the "Owls Series" to determine the Fall season champs the final week.

Key Newcomers: Pitchers

Jody Potter and Matt Bellando, both Lane CC recruits, have emerged as key components of the pitching staff. Zach O'Hanen a Junior College transfer from College of the Redwoods also looks to get quality innings on the hill for the Owls. Zach led his team in starts, Innings pitched, Wins, and Strikeouts last season. Ryan Hill, spent last year with Yakima Valley CC brings a live fastball and great potential to the Tech staff. Freshman Dakota Cavens is a Roseburg High School graduate and"Pitcher of the Year" winner from last season playing in the 6A Southwest Conference is a great addition to the Owls pitching staff.

Position Players

LA Mission CC Transfers Kevin Armendariz (Outfielder -.344 with 3 Homeruns and 30 RBI) and Mitch Garcia (Catcher-.333) are both key additions to the Tech offense. Catcher Kyle Hansen from Lane CC will also battle for the starting catcher position. Tommy Wood (Infielder) from the College of the Redwoods, Wade Elliott (1st Base) from Treasure Valley CC, Alex Poff (Outfielder) Lane CC, and Kyle Conner (Catcher/Outfielder) College of the Siskiyous are among the other JC Transfers who will be battling for jobs this fall.

The top incoming freshman include; Phil Sacks (Outfilder) from McQueen HS in Reno, NV, Hayden Wolfe (Outfielder) North Medford HS, Dustin Buttner (1st Base) Carson City, NV., Luke Jannusch (3rd Base) Ashland, OR. And Nick Jernberg (Catcher) from Willamette HS.

Phil Sacks Signs Letter of Intent with Oregon Tech

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. - Oregon Tech head baseball coach Matt Miles announced today that Phil Sacks, an explosive 5-10 outfielder from Reno, NV has signed a letter of intent to join the Owl roster in 2010.

Sacks, a graduate of Robert McQueen High School, was a 1st team all-conference, 1st team all-region, and a 1st team all-state selection in 2009. He hit .466 with a .864 slugging percentage with 47 RBI, 10 homeruns and 20 stolen bases. A Nevada Showcase baseball player in 2008, Sacks received his high school's distinguished Jim Kuraisa MVP baseball award in 2009. In 2008, Sacks and his teammates were 4A state academic baseball champions. A two sport athlete at McQueen, Sacks was also an integral member of the high school's 2008 4A state championship football team.

Sacks is the youngest son of Teresa and Barry Sacks of Reno, Nevada. Barry Sacks is a collegiate football coach at the University of Nevada. Phil was born in Portland, OR.

06.13.2009 - Oregon Tech Baseball Adds Trio to 2010 Roster

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore - Oregon Tech head baseball coach Matt Miles announced today that Dustin Buttner, Cory Staniforth and Ryan Hill will all be joining the Hustlin' Owl baseball team beginning this fall.

Buttner (Carson City, NV) a 6-3 first baseman at Carson High School was a 1st team all-conference selection in 2009, hitting .379 with a .810 slugging percentage. Buttner led the conference with 29 RBI, including six homeruns and two triples. The two-time academic and varsity letter winner also was honored with an Academic all-state award in 2008.

Dustin is the youngest son of Bob and Diane Buttner of Carson City, Nevada

Staniforth (Central Point, OR), a 6-0 shortstop from Crater High School, hit .509 with 34 RBI and four homeruns his senior season for the Comets. The Crater High three-sport standout in football, basketball and baseball was a 1st team all-state shortstop, helping the Comets to a state baseball championship 2007. Over a three-year stint with the Grants Pass Nuggets American Legion program, Staniforth batted .448 with 14 homeruns, 83 RBI and 26 stolen bases. The Lane Community College transfer led the Titans in RBI in both 2008 and 2009.

Cory is the son of Ronald and Donna Staniforth and will major in Medical Imaging at Oregon Tech beginning this fall.

Hill (White Pass, WA), a 6-5 pitcher/utility player at Yakima Valley Community College the past two years, also competed at White Pass High School as first baseman and pitcher. Hill helped his White Pass High School team to a runner-up finish in the 2007 state baseball championship where he was named the leagues Player of the Year and to the All-State team as both a position player and pitcher.

Ryan is the son of David and Suzan Hill.
