Class Standing and GPA Requirements

Class Standing

Some course descriptions may have pre-requisites that read junior standing or senior standing. Your class standing is determined by the number of credits you have completed. Institutional standing may differ from program standing, if you are a transfer student. The distinction is important for financial aid purposes.

For Oregon Tech, class standing is as follows:

Freshman       0-44
Sophomore     45-89
Junior            90-134
Senior           135 and above

The Communication Studies program has 84 unique credits. These include focused sequence credits but exclude those for general education and externship/senior project. Program class standings are as follows:

Freshman       0-21
Sophomore     22-42
Junior            43-63
Senior          64 and above

GPA Requirements

As you are developing your term schedules, keep in mind that Oregon Tech requires a cumulative GPA of 2.0 to remain in academic good standing. If your GPA drops below that, you will be placed on probation. If you do not bring your GPA up, you will be suspended for one term and must appeal to re-enter Oregon Tech after your suspension (see page 43 for information on academic appeals).

Some programs also require you to maintain a GPA of 2.0. As a Communication Studies student, you will need to pass all of your major, focused sequence, and general education communications courses with a AC@ or higher. Note, too, that mathematics courses require aAC@ to continue. If you earn a AD@ in MATH 100, you cannot register for MATH 105/111.
